Open 100+ links without freezing Safari

David Hruts · · 4 min read

To open 100 or more links without freezing Safari, set Opening in MultiOpen to When viewed or One by one before you press Open all. With When viewed, each page loads only when you switch to its tab.

What happens with the default

By default, Opening is set to At once. A short list opens right away. A long list opens in waves: the first 20 tabs open right away, and the rest follow in waves of 20, a moment apart.

Each page still starts loading as soon as its tab appears. With 100 links, that is 100 pages loading together. For a list that long, change how the tabs load.

Choose how tabs load

  1. Open MultiOpen and add your links to the list.
  2. Tap Opening to show the options. They appear once the list holds two or more links.
  3. Choose At once, One by one or When viewed.
  4. For One by one, pick a pause: 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds.
  5. Tap Open all.

When viewed: every tab now, each page later

All the tabs appear at once, but each page loads only when you switch to its tab. Until then, the tab waits and loads nothing. Safari only loads the pages you look at, so even 100 links do not slow it down.

This suits reading lists, research and anything you go through tab by tab.

One by one: a pause between tabs

Tabs open with a pause of 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds between them, so sites see no rush. Use it for many pages from the same site, such as a list of profiles or posts, where you don't want every request to arrive at the same moment.

Each tab waits for its turn on its own. You can close the MultiOpen window right away, and the tabs keep opening on schedule.

Open in parts with batches

Sometimes you want to work through a list in chunks. Under Open in batches of, pick 5, 10, 15, 20 or 50. The row appears when the list has more than five links. The green button then opens the next part each time you press it. Read 10 tabs, close them, and press again for the next 10.

Batches and Opening work together. Batches of 20 with When viewed give you 20 tabs at a time, and each page loads only when you reach it.

Which option to pick

Undo a big opening

Opened more than you meant to? Close opened tabs shows how many tabs MultiOpen just opened and closes exactly those tabs. Your other tabs stay open.

On Mac, In a new window puts the whole list in a fresh window, so the new tabs stay apart from the ones you already had. See Open multiple links at once in Safari on Mac.

Opening social profiles or posts in bulk? One by one with a 3 or 5 second pause spaces them out. More in the guide for SMM and marketing.
